Hilton Wedding Boutique sits at 109 East Main Street, a few doors from the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce office at 115 East Main. It is a bridal shop first, but the prom business runs under a name of its own — Prom @ 7 — and that is the part high school juniors and seniors in southwest Iowa come for. Four prom labels list the shop on their official retailer locators: Sherri Hill, Jovani, Clarisse and Jessica Angel.
The shop is open year-round by appointment only. Travel Iowa’s listing says so, and the business’s own name in several directories carries “by appointment only” right in it. Practically, that means two things. The visit is scheduled rather than dropped in on, and a Saturday drive to Clarinda without calling first can end at a locked door on Main Street. The number is (712) 318-1885. Curtis and Yulia, a husband-and-wife team, run the place; reviewers who mention a name almost always mention Yulia.
Where this is, in driving terms
Clarinda is the Page County seat, population 5,369 at the 2020 census, sitting where U.S. 71 crosses Iowa Highway 2. That intersection is the whole reason a dress shop here works: Iowa 2 runs east–west across the bottom tier of the state, and U.S. 71 brings traffic down from Villisca and Montgomery County. Main Street is right by the 1887 Page County courthouse, which has been on the National Register since 1981.
The alternative to shopping in town is the metro run — Council Bluffs and Omaha, roughly 76 miles northwest by Iowa 2, close to an hour and forty-five minutes each way, longer once mall parking and lunch are in the plan. A scheduled hour on East Main is a different kind of afternoon than that.
The schools in range
Clarinda Community School District is a K–12 district of about 1,060 students that plays in the Hawkeye Ten; its high school is on North Cardinal Drive, and the teams are the Cardinals. Within a normal drive of Main Street:
- Clarinda
- Shenandoah — the other Page County town of similar size, west on Iowa 2
- Essex, Stanton, Farragut and South Page
- Villisca and Red Oak, north on U.S. 71 and Iowa 48
- Southwest Valley in Corning, and Lenox
Several of those are small enough that a single graduating class is measured in dozens, which is the argument for buying a gown by appointment at a shop that knows who bought what. It is also worth asking about it directly when the appointment is booked, since nothing published confirms how the shop handles duplicate dresses by school.
If the trip is already happening
Clarinda was Glenn Miller’s hometown and holds a festival in his name in June; the 1909 Carnegie library on North 16th Street is now the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum. The Chamber’s other big dates on the calendar are Cruzin’ Clarinda, the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree and the Craft Carnival. None of that is a reason to drive here for a dress, but it is what else is open on the same block of a town this size.
