The plaza’s name is literal. Belle Vernon is a borough in Fayette County, and it abuts two other counties, Westmoreland to the north and Washington across the river — so a shop with a 15012 mailing address can pull from three school districts’ worth of proms without anyone driving very far. The White Orchid sits on the Westmoreland side of that seam; its own website gives the address as Rostraver Township, and the storefront is in Tri County Plaza, which the store describes as “just down from Giant Eagle.”
The salon opened in 1984. Jefferi Amatangelo took ownership in November 2018 and has been working through the shop since — new inventory, new designers, updated systems — while keeping it family owned and operated. The stock covers bridal, mothers, bridesmaids, prom, homecoming, flower girl and communion dresses, and tuxedo and suit rentals, which means a couple can settle the dress and the suit on the same trip to the same plaza.
What’s on the prom racks
Colette for Mon Cheri and Faviana both list this store on their official retailer locators. The store’s own prom page shows those two alongside Morilee Prom and Jovani. The White Orchid attaches a warning to that page worth repeating: not everything a designer shows online is in the store, so call before you drive on the strength of a specific style number.
Before you go
- Hours listed by the store: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11–5; Saturday 10–3; closed Tuesday and Sunday. Evenings by appointment.
- Saturday is five hours long and it is the only weekend day. If you have one shot at this with a working parent, book early in the week and go on a weekday afternoon.
- The store books appointments through an online scheduler as well as by phone at (412) 885-4411.
- No outside food or alcohol at appointments. Water, tea and coffee are fine in closed containers. Refreshments come with a scheduled private party instead.
- The in-house seamstresses only alter dresses bought at the store. For a gown from somewhere else, the shop points people to Anita Stitch in Brentwood.
That alterations rule matters more for prom than people expect. If you buy the dress here, hemming and taking in happen in the same building you bought it in. If you buy online and need it fixed, you are making a second trip toward Pittsburgh.
The drive, and who is making it
Rostraver Township sits close to Route 51, I‑70 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Pittsburgh is about 25 miles up Route 51, roughly 35 minutes; Greensburg and Washington, the Westmoreland and Washington county seats, are each under 30 miles by I‑70. That puts the plaza inside easy reach of the Mon Valley towns on both banks while the bigger mall options sit a highway trip away in three different directions.
Belle Vernon Area High School is the only high school in its district, and Rostraver students go there. Its prom includes a grand march, the escorted walk through the school that the Tribune-Review has photographed for the paper — which is the specific reason a gown here gets looked at up close, from the front, by several hundred people before the dancing starts. The store’s Facebook page has also posted about the school’s prom fashion show coming back.
