Prom, by appointment, in Rostraver

The White Orchid has been dressing families since 1984, and its address has moved with it. The salon's handle on social media still carries a Pittsburgh tag, but its contact page now places the shop in Belle Vernon, in the Tri County Plaza, "just down from Giant Eagle." The mailing line reads Rostraver Township, which is how most people out here would give directions anyway.

What you find inside is a full formal shop, and prom gets real space in it. The store's prom page names four designers, its homecoming page names four more, and the overlap shows how the racks are built, with Jovani and Faviana on both lists.

Formals share the floor with the prom and homecoming racks, and that mix covers a lot of ground. Jovani and Faviana run from sleek evening cuts to full glamour. Colette and Ellie Wilde, both from the Mon Cheri house, lean modern and a little playful. Morilee brings the ball-gown end of the spectrum, and Amarra is a homecoming favorite for short, sparkly dresses. A shopper who walks in unsure of her style can try all of those shapes in one afternoon.

Every collection page carries the same warning: not every dress shown on a designer's website is in the shop. Got a style number saved? Phone the shop and ask before heading to the plaza. The staff would rather tell you up front than have you arrive for a dress that is not on the rack.

Appointments are the rule here. The FAQ says the shop operates by appointment for both bridal and non-bridal gowns, and the booking runs through an online scheduler on the site as well as by phone. Evening visits are by appointment only. That makes prom shopping a calmer thing than the spring crush at a mall: you get a consultant and a fitting room for your time slot, and nobody is waiting on your mirror.

A new owner, a growing floor

Jefferi Amatangelo took over The White Orchid in November 2018. The store's about page describes her goal since then as updating and modernizing the salon, with new inventory, new technology and new designers, "including some of the most desired styles." It remains family owned and operated. Bridal, mothers' dresses, flower girl and communion dresses round out the inventory, but Mid-Mon Valley juniors and seniors book for the prom and homecoming racks.

The tux counter is the other reason. A couple can match a vest or tie to the dress while both are in the room. At a prom with a grand march, where every couple is introduced in front of families, that kind of coordination shows.

Alterations are handled by independently contracted seamstresses who work with the shop. There is a condition, and the FAQ states it in a single sentence:

Due to the attention needed for alterations on wedding and evening gowns, our seamstresses will only work on dresses purchased from our store.

Read that as a reason to buy here rather than a rule to work around. A prom gown bought at The White Orchid gets its hem and fit handled by the same team that sold it, and the timeline stays in one place. The FAQ also covers the etiquette of an appointment.

Groups who want snacks can book a private party, and the store supplies the refreshments.

Rostraver, the river boroughs and beyond

Tri County Plaza earns its name. Rostraver sits at a corner where Westmoreland, Fayette and Washington counties meet, and the store pulls from all three. Belle Vernon Area High School, which serves Rostraver and the river boroughs, is the closest school. Yough High School in Herminie and Elizabeth Forward High School lie to the north, and Charleroi Area and Ringgold students cross the river from the Washington County side. For families anywhere in the Mid-Mon Valley of western Pennsylvania, the plaza saves a trip into Pittsburgh.

The store has also kept prom in view on its own feed. During the 2020 shutdowns, when proms were postponed or cancelled, it reminded followers that it still had a ton of dresses in stock: "It's never too late to go shopping for prom." That has stayed true. An appointment early in the season gets the widest pick of sizes, and bringing the date lets the tux be sorted out at the same fitting.
