Sonya's

Sonya's is a clothing boutique first, and that is exactly what makes its prom section different. Sonya Janigian founded the store in the early 1980s. Over four decades it has built a following for sportswear, cocktail dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry, and the formal side grew up alongside all of that. A student shopping for prom at Sonya's stands in the same room where her mother might be buying a jacket, and the staff dress both.

Since 1983, Sonya’s has been Rhode Island’s premier destination for timeless fashion and exceptional service.

The prom rack, by the numbers

Prom sits under the Formals menu with its own collection page, and the online selection gives a clear picture of the mix. Jovani accounts for the largest share by far, roughly 40 of about 100 prom styles listed. Portia & Scarlett, La Femme and Alyce Paris follow, with smaller groups from Faviana, Tarik Ediz and Mac Duggal. The full designer page adds formal houses including Terani Couture, MNM Couture and Jasz Couture.

Homecoming is a separate collection from prom on the site.

Two policies apply to every gown. All formalwear and cocktail dress sales, in store and online, are final. And the website shows designer suggested retail prices, because the store explains that its designers do not allow their collections to be displayed online for less than MSRP.

The testimonials Sonya's publishes lean heavily on prom. One mother describes the selection running from simple and elegant to heavily embellished; another came in with her daughter, was in and out in about an hour, and left with a red Faviana gown. Finding Oaklawn Avenue

The store publishes turn-by-turn directions from both interstates. Coming from I-95 in either direction, the route runs like this.

1. Take Exit 14B and merge onto Route 37 West toward Route 2.
2. Take Exit 2B for Route 2 South, New London Avenue.
3. Stay on Route 2 South for about a mile and a half.
4. Turn right onto Oaklawn Avenue, Route 5, and look for the store on the right.

From I-295, the store routes drivers onto Route 37 East at Exit 3A and then to the same Route 2 South turn. The lot directly in front of the boutique has free parking, which matters when you leave with a gown in a garment bag.

Western Cranston and beyond

Western Cranston is home turf, with Cranston High School West the nearest large school and Cranston High School East across the city. Johnston High School is just north, and West Warwick and Warwick students come up Route 2 and Route 5. Because the store also ships from Cranston and sells online, shoppers from farther afield in the Providence suburbs of Rhode Island can browse the prom page first and come in to try a shortlist.
