Who sews the hem? How much does layaway want down? Will the shop keep a classmate out of your gown? Below, the shops are sorted by the regions families here drive, with one service detail each.
North Alabama, from the Shoals to Sand Mountain
- Cherry Tree Lane, Florence (Lauderdale County): registers each prom gown by color for each school; free layaway at half down, paid off in 30 days.
- The Dress Shoppe, Florence (Lauderdale County): the renamed Juanita's Fashions, moved over from Muscle Shoals in 2025, with online booking it does not require.
- Modern Brides Inc., Huntsville (Madison County): brides book, prom shoppers come in any time during store hours, and an in-house seamstress handles fittings.
- Weddings Pageants & Proms, Boaz (Marshall County): no prom appointment, and bridal goes appointment-only from January to June to keep spring open for prom.
- Golden Treasures, Fort Payne (DeKalb County): more than 3,500 gowns, with a stock filter that checks up to three sizes before you leave home.
- Simply Stunning, Oneonta (Blount County): layaway at 20 percent down with 120 days to pay.
Sewing is the weak spot up here. Only the Huntsville shop keeps a seamstress on staff. Boaz prices alterations separately and refers you out, and Oneonta's independent seamstress won't book a fitting until the gown is paid off. Pair that with 120-day layaway and the math gets tight.
Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and the River Region
- The Clothes Tree, Birmingham (Jefferson County): no appointments necessary, and a Gown Guarantee that logs every gown sold to area schools and pageants.
- Fit For A Crown Prom & Pageant, Trussville (Jefferson County): open hours, plus a request form that asks your event date and budget so gowns are pulled before you arrive.
- Bella's Bridal & Formal, Hoover (Jefferson and Shelby): a prom manager on the team page, and seamstresses who alter dresses bought anywhere, online orders included.
- Glitz & Gowns by Missy, Alabaster (Shelby County): walk-ins all year, a 90-minute private styling slot on season weekends for a $50 deposit, and 90-day layaway.
- Glitz & Glamour, Pell City (St. Clair County): twelve dressing rooms and custom alterations.
- Classy Threads Bridal & Formal, Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa County): in-house alterations, but only for gowns bought there.
- Bridal Btq & Tux Shoppe, Millbrook (Elmore County): no appointment for prom or tuxedos; layaway and special orders offered.
This is where the sewing rooms are. Three of the four shops on this page with alterations under their own roof sit in this stretch, and only Bella's takes outside work. That makes Hoover the fix for an online order that arrives two inches too long. Millbrook has no seamstress of its own and hands out names instead.
East Alabama along the Georgia line
- The Quality Shoppe, Jacksonville (Calhoun County): on the square since 1935, with no appointment for prom, pageant or a single tux.
- The Pageant Prepper, Anniston (Calhoun County): every sale final, no exchanges, and UPS shipping for shoppers who cannot make the drive.
- Ever After Prom and Bridal, Ranburne (Cleburne County): walk-in shopping, and online orders checked against your wear date before you are billed.
- Gabrielle's Formals & Events, Smiths Station (Lee County): appointment only, set by an associate who calls you back.
Gabrielle's is the lone booking-only shop, trading spontaneity for a floor nobody else is on. Families who hate crowds should take that deal. Families fitting prom around ball games will lean toward Calhoun and Cleburne.
The Wiregrass
- Lasting Impressions AL, Eufaula (Barbour County): no repeat of a dress in the same color at one school; free layaway at 25 percent down, finished within 60 days.
- Formally Yours, Dothan (Houston County): layaway and payment plans, and private appointments for anyone who asks.
- The Competitive Image, Dothan (Houston County): asks you to phone about sizes in stock or to place an order.
- Admiring Glances, Enterprise (Coffee County): in-stock sizes and colors posted with each photo, and special orders for the rest.
- Elan, Andalusia (Covington County): no appointment in regular hours, Sundays by appointment, and spray tans in the building.
Paying over time is the Wiregrass habit. Two of these five put layaway in writing, and Eufaula sets payments every 14 days. It also caps each shopper at four dresses off the floor at once, a rule that keeps a Saturday moving.

Foley lets you search in-store stock by size online. Mobile calls its gallery a look book, not a stock list, so call before you drive.

The Birmingham-to-Tuscaloosa stretch. Classy Threads, Bella's and Glitz & Glamour all keep alterations in-house, and Bella's will even fix a dress bought elsewhere. Outside that corridor, Modern Brides in Huntsville is the one other shop with a seamstress on staff.
How early should a special-order prom gown be placed?
Order by early winter for a spring dance. Glitz & Gowns says its customers start three to six months out. The Boaz shop's shorter advice, 8 to 12 weeks, is a floor, and it will custom order a gown not stocked in your size. Budget for the deposit too. Simply Stunning wants at least half the price, non-refundable, before it orders, and The Clothes Tree and Glitz & Glamour treat special orders as final sale.
