Jamie’s Dresses & Dreams runs by appointment only, off Highway 78 in Sumiton

Jamie's Dresses & Dreams stocks Alyce Paris, Clarisse, Johnathan Kayne and Tiffany Designs by appointment only, on Highway 78 in Sumiton, east of Jasper.

Est. 2012

No drop-ins. The shop’s own Facebook and Instagram pages say it in capital letters: appointment only, booked by messaging either page, texting 205-401-5462, or calling (205) 255-6540. Several directory listings still publish walk-in hours for the store, and they contradict each other, so the appointment is the part worth trusting. Message first, then drive.

That model makes sense here. Sumiton counted 2,444 residents in the 2020 census, straddling the Walker–Jefferson county line at the high point of U.S. 78 — the road that gave the town its name back when it was called Summit. The store sits at 561 Highway 78, Suite 106, near the York Street intersection. From Alabama’s I-22, it’s Exit 78 north on County Road 81 through Dora, or Exit 85 up old U.S. 78. Jasper is about fifteen minutes west; the north edge of Birmingham runs roughly half an hour southeast.

Who actually shops here

Dora High School is the closest public high school, under a mile from the Sumiton Christian School campus on Hosanna Drive. Sumiton Christian is a private K-12 school of about 355 students, founded in 1976, playing as the Eagles in the Alabama Independent School Association. The rest of the Walker County district’s high schools — Curry, Oakman, Cordova and Carbon Hill — are all inside a reasonable drive, and Bevill State Community College’s main campus, its largest, occupies 95 acres on Highway 78 in town. A shop in this spot is drawing from a spread of small schools rather than one big one, which is part of why booking a slot beats hoping for an empty fitting room on a Saturday in March.

The labels on the rack

Four brands list this store on their own official retailer locators:

  • Alyce Paris
  • Clarisse
  • Tiffany Designs
  • Johnathan Kayne

That last one is worth noting. Johnathan Kayne turns up more often on a pageant stage than in a prom photo, so a store carrying it is generally set up for competition dressing as well as spring formals. What the shop stocks at any given moment is a question for the appointment — a small independent buys a season at a time, and no directory can tell anyone what is on the floor this week.

Practical notes before the trip

Jamie Snell has run the business since August 2012, as a sole proprietorship, according to its Better Business Bureau file. Google reviewers give it a 4.4 average across 24 ratings. One address caution: the BBB profile and some review aggregators still carry an older Parr Street listing in Sumiton, and at least one brand locator lists suites 106 and 108. The 561 Highway 78 address is the one the brands point to now.

If the drive is coming from farther out, the town’s one big traffic day is the Frog Festival, held on Main Street the first Saturday in October, with close to 300 vendors and thousands of visitors. Any other Saturday, Highway 78 through Sumiton moves fine.
