224 Main Street West is a bank building. The shop’s own account of the place says it is housed in the Farmers and Merchants Bank, built in 1915, and describes a baby grand piano and comfortable seating just inside the front door — which is what the room is for, since most of the business here is brides and the people who come along with them.
The Something Blue Shoppe has been selling gowns in downtown Hartselle a long time. A designer’s retailer profile published in January 2020 said the shop was turning 51 that year and called it north Alabama’s oldest full-service salon, and the Better Business Bureau listing now puts it at 57 years in business. Both point to a 1969 opening. Consultants there told WAFF in 2024 that they are working with a third generation of the same families, and that brides walk in saying their mother and grandmother bought dresses in the same store.
The prom and pageant side
Jasz, La Femme and Tiffany Designs all list this address on their official retailer locators. Those are prom and pageant labels, not bridal ones, and they line up with how the store has long described itself — as a bridal and pageant salon in downtown Hartselle, carrying prom and pageant dresses alongside the wedding gowns.
For years the teen half of the business ran under its own name. The Decatur Daily reported in 2013 that Something Blue Too, an extension of the Main Street store, carried prom dresses in sizes 0 to 30W plus pageant gowns from toddler to adult sizes, with shoes, jewelry and accessories, and a DJ playing in the shop on Saturdays during dress season. That same story followed a Hazel Green High School junior who came down with her mother, aunt and step-sister for a full day of shopping — roughly an hour from home, which is about the radius this store works at.
One caution worth knowing before you drive: the shop’s current website is built almost entirely around bridal, and its prom category page returns no dresses. Call (256) 773-4956 and ask what is on the floor for prom this season rather than assuming the online catalog reflects it.
Getting there, and when it is open
Hartselle is laid out on U.S. 31 north to south and State Highway 36 east to west, with Interstate 65 about two miles east of town. That puts the store within easy reach of most of Morgan County. Hartselle High students are the closest customers; Morgan County Schools runs Danville, Falkville, Priceville and A.P. Brewer high schools in the towns around the city. The store has described its regular trade area as Huntsville, Madison, Cullman, Florence and Birmingham, with wedding parties coming down from southern Tennessee.
Posted hours are unusual enough to check twice. The shop’s site lists Monday, Tuesday and Friday 10am–4pm and Saturday 9am–2pm, with Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons by appointment only. It is closed Wednesdays. Bridal is appointment-driven — the standard consultation is free and runs an hour and a half, with paid upgrade tiers that add gifts and a champagne toast. Prom is usually walk-in at shops like this one, but on a two-day-a-week schedule in September or January, a phone call first saves the trip.
If you are coming in late September, note that Depot Days takes over the historic downtown and depot district, which changes parking on Main Street considerably.
