What a label page tells you

Each of the 29 labels above has its own page listing every boutique that stocks it, grouped by state, so the question changes from "who carries this designer" to "which of the shops that carry it is nearest, and does it need an appointment". That is the order most shoppers actually work in: settle on a house whose cut and price suit you, then choose the room.

The store counts are live. A designer can be added to a shop's roster in January and dropped by June, and the pages move with it. The labels shown are checked against each designer's own retailer locator for that address, which is a stronger claim than a homepage banner: it means the house sells to that store and will honor a special order placed through it.

The few that are everywhere, and the many that are not

Reach is lopsided. Jovani sits in 466 of the 739 shops listed, 63 percent, across 43 states; Sherri Hill is in 356 and Alyce Paris in 299. Below those, the median label appears in 157 shops nationally, and the smallest, MNM Couture, in 35 shops across 16 states.

The practical reading: if your shortlist is Jovani or Sherri Hill, you can choose a shop on convenience and fit. If it is a smaller house, look at its page first, because it may be one address in your state. The widest spread by state belongs to Sherri Hill, in 45 states.

How designers and shops divide the map

Prom houses sell through authorized retailers, and most protect those retailers with territory: a designer will often refuse to open a second account within a set distance of an existing one, which is why a label can be easy to find in one metro and absent in the next. The same system is behind the one-per-school rule many shops run. A boutique that logs which style number went to which school is protecting both the customer and its own standing with the house, since duplicate dresses at one prom reflect on the retailer.

It also explains the shape of a shop's roster. The average boutique here carries 7.6 of these labels and the deepest carries 26. A shop with three labels has usually chosen them to cover three price points rather than three looks; a shop with twenty is buying breadth and will have the trunk-show and reorder relationships that come with it.

How to shop by label

Start from the designer's page here rather than from the designer's own site. A house's site shows the whole collection; a shop carries an edit of it, typically the silhouettes and colors the buyer expects to sell in that region, so the dress you saved is not guaranteed to be on the rack. Call the shop with the style number, ask whether it is in the store or a special order, and ask when it would arrive. Special orders through the house run several weeks in season and that is before alterations.

Sizing is the other reason to buy from a shop. Most prom houses cut to their own charts, and the shop's fitter knows how each label runs. That is knowledge you cannot get from a size guide, and it is the difference between a dress that needs a hem and one that needs rebuilding.

Questions people ask

Questions people ask

What does "authorized retailer" mean for a prom label?

That the designer sells directly to that shop and lists it on its own retailer locator. An authorized shop can special-order any style in the current collection, will receive the house's new season on time, and is covered when a dress arrives with a fault. A shop selling a label it is not authorized for is usually working from closeouts or a middleman, which means no reorders and no recourse.

Why is a designer I want only carried in one shop in my state?

Territory protection. Houses limit how many accounts they open in an area so that their retailers are not competing on the same dresses, and a smaller label may hold one account per metro or per state. The label page shows every shop that carries it, so you can see at a glance whether the trip is twenty minutes or two hours.

Can a shop order a dress from a label it does not carry?

Generally no. Ordering requires an account with the house, and opening one is a wholesale relationship with minimums, not a one-off request. If a shop tells you it can "get" a label it does not list, ask how; the honest answer is usually that it cannot.

How are the label lists on the store pages verified?

Each list is checked against the designers' own retailer locators, and we list what those locators confirm. That is why a store page can show fewer labels than the shop's window does.

Do the store counts include closed shops?

No. Only published, reviewed boutiques count toward a label's total, and a shop that closes is unpublished, so its labels come off these pages with it.
