Thirty-Four Years of Long Island Prom at Outrageous

Owner Amy ran a shop called Amy’s of Syosset before she opened Outrageous Boutique on Manetto Hill Road in Plainview in 1991. That earlier operation gave her the kind of accumulated tailoring and styling experience that’s hard to develop quickly. By the time Outrageous opened, Amy had already spent years fitting prom dresses for central Long Island seniors, and the new shop carried that institutional knowledge from day one.

That’s part of why a 34-year-old prom boutique on Manetto Hill Road still pulls families from across Nassau County. Plainview, Syosset, Bethpage, Jericho, Westbury — the same web of school districts that fed Amy’s Syosset shop in the 80s now feeds Outrageous in the 2020s. The customer base is genuinely multi-generational. Amy has fit prom dresses on the daughters of customers she fit in the 90s, and a few who came in for sweet 16 or graduation.

The Sizing Range and the In-House Tailoring

Outrageous carries sizes 00 through 32 across the floor. That’s not a special-order add-on — both standard and women’s cuts sit in the main inventory. Most independent boutiques in the formal-wear category outsource alterations and treat plus sizes as a catalog category. Amy’s done the opposite. The combination of in-house tailoring under an owner with three-plus decades of fitting experience plus a 00-through-32 size range is the actual product. That’s why the customer base reflects the recognition with multi-event, multi-generational loyalty.

The designer floor anchors the major prom and special-occasion lines:

  • JVN Prom for contemporary silhouettes weighted toward younger seniors
  • Jovani across the broader prom and evening collections
  • Mori Lee for the wider special-occasion range
  • Faviana for trend-forward prom styles
  • La Femme for polished classic prom and evening looks
  • House of Wu, Tiffany Designs, Alyce, and Amarra across the rest of the floor
  • Terani Couture for dramatic statement pieces

The Manetto Hill Road location is part of the appeal. Plainview’s commercial corridor isn’t a strip mall and isn’t a downtown — it’s the kind of mid-density Long Island stretch where independent boutiques can hold their ground without getting crowded out by chain stores. Parking is straightforward. Coffee shops and restaurants are nearby. A prom appointment usually folds into a longer Saturday outing rather than feeling like a quick errand.

The trade area extends across central Nassau County. Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District drives the local share. Syosset, Jericho, Bethpage, Westbury, and the surrounding districts also send a meaningful flow of seniors. Bridal customers come in too — usually returning from earlier prom or sweet 16 visits — but the prom side stays the operational core.

Are appointments required?

Walk-ins are welcome. An appointment helps during peak season — Amy can prep ahead based on what you tell her about your school, the venue, and your fit needs. That’s especially useful for plus-size shoppers who want a focused selection rather than browsing the whole floor.

What’s the price range?

Prom dresses span the typical Long Island mid-tier range, with budget-friendly options on the lower end and higher-tier statement pieces priced higher. The 10-plus-designer roster gives genuine spread within whatever budget you bring in.
