Most dress shops add a seamstress later. This one went the other direction. The store’s own account of its history says the business began nearly a decade before it opened a storefront, as alterations work done out of a house in Oklahoma City, with boutiques around town sending customers over. The retail store followed in 1987. Thirty-plus years on, alterations are still the center of the operation, and they are included in-house with dresses bought there.
For a prom shopper that is the practical difference. The hem, the bust, the straps that need shortening — all of it happens in the same building where the dress was purchased, and it is not a separate line on the invoice. The shop also runs a layaway plan, which matters when a gown is bought in January for an April dance.
Where it sits
The store is on South Western Avenue just north of I-240, in the Western View Shopping Center — a strip-center stop, not a mall trip. That distinction is real on the south side: Crossroads Mall, later rebranded as Plaza Mayor at the I-240/I-35 junction, closed at the end of October 2017, and south Oklahoma City has been without an enclosed mall since. Gown shopping here means driving to a specific address rather than wandering a concourse.
Keep going south on the same road and you reach Westmoore High School at 12613 S. Western Ave., about five and a half miles down, with roughly 2,600 students in Moore Public Schools. West of the store, U.S. Grant High School sits at 5016 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Oklahoma City Public Schools. Between the Moore district and OKCPS’s south-side schools, this shop is inside the everyday driving radius of several thousand juniors and seniors who do not have to cross town to the north-side malls to find a gown.
