Inside that small footprint sit a dozen certified World’s Largest objects, and two of the best-known are on East Main: this stretch of Clark County holds the wind chime you can actually ring and, directly across the street, a rocking chair that weighs 46,200 pounds. Crazy Beautiful sells prom dresses from a storefront on that same block, a short walk from the town’s only stoplight.
Two names, one short block
The business runs as two pieces. The boutique side sells everyday clothing and describes itself on Facebook as a boutique on a budget. Formal wear is kept separate, with its own Facebook page, its own phone line and its own posted hours — the boutique page tells shoppers looking for gowns to go find the Crazy Beautiful Formal Wear page instead. The listings do not fully agree on the number: Amarra’s retailer locator gives 8 E. Main St. with a 217 number, while the formal wear Facebook page gives 6 E. Clark County has three public high schools: Casey-Westfield Jr/Sr High on East Edgar Avenue here in town, Marshall High School, and Martinsville Jr-Sr High. They are all small. Casey-Westfield enrolls roughly 360 students across grades 7 through 12 — on the order of sixty per grade — and Marshall runs about 340 in grades 9 through 12. In a prom crowd that size, who bought which gown is common knowledge by the following Monday, which is the practical argument for asking the store what has already gone out to your school.
Getting there
Casey sits at I-70 exit 129 (Illinois 49), almost exactly halfway between Terre Haute and Effingham — about 35 miles east to Terre Haute, about 36 miles west to Effingham. That midpoint position is the reason a town of 2,400 can support a dress shop at all: it is a short interstate hop from a wide stretch of east-central Illinois and western Indiana. The next Faviana-stocking shop turned up in Mattoon, to the northwest.
A third-party listing aggregating Google reviews showed a 4.7 average across 17 reviews for the formal wear side, with shoppers naming the fitting-room and mirror area as recently redone. There is no store website on file; the formal wear Facebook page is where hours and new arrivals get posted.
One thing worth knowing if you are driving in from an hour out: the big things are free, outdoors, and mostly within a three-block radius of the dress shop, and the downtown around them includes the Yarn Studio (with its record-size knitting needles) and Whitling Whimsy Cafe.
