Kingsport City Schools operates a single high school. Dobyns-Bennett enrolled 2,351 students in 2023–24, and there is one D-B prom — a late-April Saturday, held in recent years at the MeadowView conference center. That math is the thing to understand before you shop here. In a town with four high schools, two girls in the same dress is bad luck. In Kingsport, it is close to a coin flip if you buy late.
The Encounter sits at 120 Jack White Drive, a short street off Eastman Road on the commercial spine of the city, near the Kingsport Greenbelt. The store’s own description puts it “in a cove near the Greenbelt walking trail.” It is not a mall shop and not a prom-only shop. The business dates its founding to 1976 and sells women’s clothing across the board — work suiting, daywear, evening — with formal as one part of the floor rather than the whole of it. Owner Ethel Smawley has taken prom looks onto WJHL’s Daytime Tri-Cities to walk through the season’s colors and silhouettes.
What is verified on the racks
Three labels list this store on their official retailer locators:
- Clarisse — the junior prom mainstay: fitted crepe, sequins, two-piece and corset bodices.
- Jovani — the broadest of the three, running from simple satin columns to heavily beaded ballgowns.
- MNM Couture — evening and special occasion rather than teen prom, which is the label a mother, an aunt, or a pageant contestant would be looking through.
Beyond those three, do not assume. Call (423) 247-4806 and ask what is actually hanging in your size before you drive over.
Who else shops here
The trade area is wider than city limits. West Ridge High School in Blountville opened in 2021 out of the consolidation of Sullivan North, Sullivan Central and Sullivan South, and enrolled 1,683 students in its second year; Sullivan East is the county’s other high school. Add the Hawkins County towns west along the river and the Virginia line fifteen minutes north, and a single storefront in northeast Tennessee can be fielding four or five different prom dates in the same six weeks. The Encounter posts customers to Facebook tagged by school and prom year, which is worth scrolling before you go — it is the closest thing available to seeing what has already sold to your school.
Hours, and the Sunday catch
The store lists 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Sunday is 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. — a two-hour window, which is not enough time to try on fifteen dresses with a mother and two friends. If Sunday is your only option, treat it as reconnaissance and come back on a weekday afternoon for the real fitting.
The alternatives are not far but they are a drive: David’s Bridal and Dynasty Formals are both in Johnson City, roughly half an hour southeast on I-26. That makes The Encounter the in-town option for a city whose largest employer, Eastman Chemical, accounts for about 6,500 jobs and whose prom crowd is concentrated in one building on Tribe Way.
Two things we could not confirm: whether alterations are done in house, and whether tuxedos are handled at all. Kingsport has a dedicated tux shop, so plan on that being a second errand unless the phone call says otherwise.
