KooKoo's Nest

KooKoo's Nest began as an entrepreneurship project its owner, Kinzey, put together while she was still in high school. After her senior year she opened and managed Fiancee Bismarck for nine years, and in November 2016 she and her husband Aaron bought the store from its previous owner. In 2017 the shop took the KooKoo's Nest name. The prom gowns and the tuxedo counter stayed, and so did the main job: dressing students from across central North Dakota for prom, with suits and tuxes for their dates.

The store is on East Interstate Avenue in north Bismarck. Its prom shoppers come from all three Bismarck Public Schools high schools, Bismarck High, Century and Legacy, plus Mandan High across the Missouri River and St. Mary's Central. Families from smaller towns farther out make the trip as well, and the appointment FAQ sets aside a paragraph for weather and bad roads, promising to reschedule when winter gets in the way.

The labels and the sizes

The prom roster on the store's FAQ reads Sherri Hill, Jovani, Ashley Lauren, Ellie Wilde, Jessica Angel and La Femme, and the About page adds Morilee. The owners say the list keeps growing as they find designers whose fit, construction and structure meet their standard. Sizes run from 000 to 30 in the store, the online catalog has its own plus-size prom section and a short Sherri Hill section, and there is a sale rack. Formalwear starts at $298.

KooKoo's guarantees its prices and will match any authorized retailer. Its FAQ is blunt about the rest: a much cheaper copy of the same style on another site is most likely a knockoff made from cheaper materials. For a gown the store does not have in your size or color, the consultants "build the dress on you" first, trying the neckline, fabric, silhouette and color so you can picture the finished order. Once a special order is placed, the size and color are locked and it cannot be cancelled, and every sale at the store is final.

The policy page also explains how the floor stays in order. Stylists carry every gown to and from the fitting room, only staff zip or lace a dress, and tulle and ball gowns are always tried on with help.

One policy shapes the whole season here, and that is the registry. It is tracked by style number and color for each event, and it resets every season.

The prom FAQ adds that a duplicate sale gets flagged in the point-of-sale system and cannot go through, and that staff will not share who bought which gown. The registry only covers gowns bought at KooKoo's itself, so a dress from another retailer is outside it.

Timing a visit and booking a slot

The new season opens the first Saturday after Christmas, when booked try-ons begin, and walk-in help starts in early January. Stock peaks from late December to late January, and new arrivals keep landing almost daily until mid-March. Early shoppers also have the widest choice for special orders in another size or color. The store's own tip is to come on a weekday, when there are fewer shoppers and the team has more flexibility.

During prom season, bookings are required on weekends and holidays and recommended the rest of the week. Walk-ins sign in, join a waitlist and get a text when a consultant is free, then try two gowns per round. Booked shoppers get three per round and their own fitting room. The guest limits are firm because the space is tight.

A booking fee holds the slot and comes off the price of the gown you buy. The fee is non-refundable, but the appointment FAQ says staff will set up a later try-on if nothing works the first time, since new gowns arrive daily in season. Add-ons such as early or after-hours time can be booked too. In winter, everyone takes off their shoes at the door to protect the hems, so bring dry indoor shoes or slippers. Most shoppers just go around in socks.

Dates are handled on the same floor, and most tux customers come in February or March once the dress is chosen.

KooKoo's Nest questions from Bismarck families

Does KooKoo's Nest sell anything besides prom gowns?

Yes. There is homecoming and pageant wear, a boutique side with short dresses and juniors' and women's ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, and gowns for mothers. The shop does not carry traditional wedding gowns or bridesmaid dresses, though some brides choose its white and ivory social-occasion styles.

Where should I take my KooKoo's gown for alterations?

Alterations are not done in the store. The team keeps a list of seamstresses it recommends around the state and can talk through what your gown needs during the appointment. Most seamstresses want the dress four to six weeks before the event, and rush fees apply after that.
