Well before the tickets go on sale. Frederick County Public Schools published a prom schedule that spread one spring's dances from April 29 to Rock Creek's on May 19. That is a three-week season. The dress, the order and the hem all have to land before it starts, and each region's shops run on a different clock.

Small regions feel a shared date hard. A 2015 Associated Press story out of Cumberland reported four area high schools holding their proms on the same May 9, and local formal-wear outfitters said the school board should have staggered them. The Cumberland Times-News covered that crunch and photographed Marlene Lennox arranging prom gowns for display. Washington County, one county east, has no listed shop at all.

Here the risk is a date that moves. Stephen Decatur High had planned its 2024 prom for April 27 at the Ocean City convention center, WBOC reported, until a larger booking took the hall and the dance slid to May 11. A later date sounds like breathing room. It isn't, if your gown is sitting in a Salisbury alterations queue that grows with the season.

Should a late-spring prom gown be chiffon, satin or sequins?
Chiffon is the safest pick for a warm May night, because it breathes and hems quickly. Satin gives structure and photographs well, but it shows old needle holes, so book the first fitting early.
