Where the shops are
Edith's opened downtown in 1937 as a ladies' clothing store. No other prom shop listed in the state has an earlier founding year. It has also changed hands several times, most recently in December 2025, when a new couple bought it and then moved the whole operation one block north. Keep that in mind as you read the dates below. A founding year proves a name has lasted. Who is pulling gowns for you this March is a separate question.
Read by region, though, the years do show a pattern. The Madison side of the state holds the deepest run of dated shops, the Milwaukee suburbs hold a middle generation still run by its founders, and the far ends of the map lean on one or two stores each.

Dane, Rock and Sauk counties have the longest memory, and almost none of it stayed put. Vera's started in 1964 in a farmhouse south of Janesville and reached Madison in 1981, the same year the family business behind Brides N' Belles began. Premiere Couture has lived in three towns since 1994. Old here means a store that kept moving to bigger rooms, and Brides N' Belles eventually gave prom a building of its own.

The suburbs in Waukesha and Washington counties belong to a second wave. Roxanne Schatz taught school for 18 years before opening Amelishan in 1995, and her daughters later joined her. Sue Kolupar opened Dressed In Time in 2006 and now runs it with her daughter Tammy. Founder-run shops tend to keep founder-made rules, so Amelishan books one appointment per shopper, even for friends who want to browse together, and tells families to buy six months out.

Fond du Lac, Brown and Kewaunee counties carry the widest spread of years, from 1937 to at least 2006. Two of those dates are floors rather than exact years. Edith's is the case to study. Under its newest owners it sells prom off the rack and stops taking prom special orders before peak season, so a family that remembers the store from years back should check the current rules.

Out here the map thins and the dates split. The Wedding Tree has sold in downtown La Crosse since 1976, under one owner since 1996. It has since closed three departments to concentrate on bridal, menswear and prom. Dreams in Richland Center has no date we can confirm.

JP Togs works alone up here, and no listed shop sits beyond it toward Lake Superior. Its founding year is not on file. What it does have is focus. Dances are the whole business, from homecoming in fall to prom in spring.
A founding year does not come with a seamstress
Look at who alters in the building and age stops predicting much. Edith's, Vera's and The Wedding Tree, the three oldest, all hand buyers a list of outside seamstresses. Brides N' Belles, Tina Marie's, Dressed In Time and Elaine's alter on site, though the Reedsburg shop fits only gowns it sold. Close to the dance? Choose the workroom first.

Which part of Wisconsin has prom shops with the longest track record?
The Madison side. Vera's, Brides N' Belles and Premiere Couture all opened before 1995, and no other region has three dated shops that old. The single oldest name is Edith's in Fond du Lac, but one store does not make a region.
How does a school dress registry work when you buy a prom gown?
It is one store's record of who bought which gown for which school, and it covers only that store. Brides N' Belles registers each prom purchase to the buyer's school and says no one else will buy that exact dress from the shop. The Wedding Tree records every dress it sells yet will not be held responsible if a duplicate goes out in any size or color. Neither list can see a classmate's online order. Give your school and dance at the register, and buy early, since the record only blocks the shoppers who come after you.
