Junior Prom vs. Senior Prom

Some schools hold one prom for both grades. Others hold two, with different rules, hosts and traditions. How the setups differ, with real school examples.

Ask a few people what junior prom is. You will get different answers. At some schools it is the only prom, open to juniors and seniors together. At others it is a separate dance held weeks before the senior prom. At a few, juniors get the prom and seniors get a different kind of event. None of these is the real version. It depends on your school.

The idea is old. According to History.com, The Harvard Crimson mentioned a "Junior Prom" in 1879, and the first guidebook for students attending the dance, published in 1936, was called The Junior-Senior Prom. Both names are still in use.

When there are two proms

Separate proms usually mean everything is separate. Greenwich High School's 2026 junior and senior proms were both at the Stamford Hilton, with dinner, dessert and dancing. But each had its own class advisors. Each had its own ticket window and its own guest permission slip. The school had already set its 2027 dates too, with the junior prom in April and the senior prom in June.

Rocklin High School in California lists a Junior Prom on March 6, 2027 and a Senior Ball on April 24, 2027. Both are formal, off campus and include dinner. Each is for one class only. The school says the only way in is to be a member of that class or a member's guest. Riverton High School in Utah draws a sharper line. Its 2026-27 schedule lists the Junior Prom in March as a formal dance. The Senior Dinner Dance in May is semi-formal, for seniors only, and attended stag, meaning without dates.

For students, two proms can mean two tickets, two outfits and two sets of plans over two years. A junior dating a senior might even attend both in the same spring, if guest rules allow it.

When it is one combined prom

At a combined prom, most students go twice, once as a junior and once as a senior. The name on the ticket does not always tell you who attends. The Glens Falls Chronicle's 2026 roundup of proms around Glens Falls, New York, described several schools' dances as a junior prom with a junior court. Yet one of them, Johnsburg, invited students in grades 9 through 12. Hartford, the paper noted, holds a junior-senior prom every other year and crowns both a junior and a senior court.

Not everyone loves the combined format. In a 2018 opinion piece in The Wolfpacket, the student paper at Claremont High School, a junior who had moved from another state wrote that she had grown up thinking prom was a senior privilege and argued it should go back to being seniors only. Expectations really do differ from place to place.

Who plans it and who pays

At some schools, prom is the junior class's job. Pembroke High School in Massachusetts runs a combined Junior-Senior Prom. The school says the junior class bears sole responsibility each year for planning and paying for it. The proceeds help fund senior-year events such as a senior breakfast and dinner. At Becton Regional High School in New Jersey, a prom committee of juniors chooses the theme, invitations and decorations and fundraises to bring down the price of bids.

Where proms are separate, the junior prom can itself be the fundraiser. Glen Cove High School in New York describes the junior prom as the junior class's largest fundraiser, with class funds going toward senior prom the following year. And some schools give seniors a break. At University School, run by East Tennessee State University, seniors attend the 2027 junior-senior prom free, and tickets are $15 for everyone else.

What it means for you

Check your school's prom page or ask a class advisor three things. Is there one prom or two? Who can attend each one? And can you bring a guest from another grade or school? Our guides to what grade prom is for and who can go to prom cover the rules in more depth.

If your school holds two proms, plan your budget for both years, and check the prom dates early, since separate proms can be weeks apart. When you are ready to shop, you can browse prom shops by state.

Questions people ask

Is junior prom as formal as senior prom?

Usually, yes. Where schools hold both, each is typically a formal evening event. Some schools mark senior year with a different style of event instead, such as a semi-formal dinner dance, so check how your school describes each one.

Can a junior go to senior prom?

At schools with one combined prom, juniors attend as a matter of course. Where the proms are separate, a junior can often go to senior prom only as a senior's guest, and some schools keep the senior event for seniors alone.

Why does the junior class pay for prom at some schools?

Mostly tradition. At some schools the junior class plans prom and raises the money for it, and any profit helps fund senior-year events. Pembroke High School in Massachusetts, for one, says its junior class is solely responsible for planning and paying for its combined prom.
