One Month Before Prom

With about four weeks to go, the job shifts from choosing to finishing. Fittings, flowers, tickets and confirmations, plus a rescue plan if the dress is still missing.

A month before prom, the big decisions should be behind you. What is left is a run of smaller jobs with fixed deadlines. None of them is hard. Most of them simply cannot be done late.

For most students this stage lands in April or May. The jobs below run roughly in order. If you do not have a dress yet, skip to the rescue plan near the end. The full prom planning timeline shows how this month fits with the rest.

Get to your first fitting

By now the dress should be in your hands, and your first alterations fitting should be on the calendar. Jovani's 2026 buying guide suggests booking that first fitting within two weeks of buying, giving the tailor about a month, and planning the final fitting for the week before the dance. Lara, a dress retailer, puts standard alterations at four to six weeks and says rush work is possible but costs extra.

So if you have not booked yet, call this week. Bring the shoes and undergarments you will wear on the night, because both change where the hem falls and how the bodice sits. At the fitting, do more than stand still. Sit, walk, lift your arms and dance a little. A dress that only works standing up is not finished. Our guides to prom dress alterations and what to wear under a prom dress go into detail.

Buy shoes now if you have not

The tailor needs your shoes to set the hem, so they cannot wait until prom week. Buy them before the first fitting, then wear them around the house for a few evenings so the first long night in them is not prom night. Our guide to prom shoes has more on comfort and heel height.

Reserve or check the suit

One month out is the tail end of the rental window. Generation Tux recommends setting up a prom rental at least four to six weeks ahead. It ships suits to arrive 14 days before prom, so there is time to try everything on at home, and gives renters three days after the event to send it back. If you are renting and have not reserved, do it now. If you bought a suit, get any tailoring started this week.

This is also the moment to check that the suit and dress work together. The suit color matcher helps if you are unsure.

Order flowers in the next week or two

The Society of American Florists advises ordering prom flowers at least two weeks ahead. It notes that prom season is also peak wedding season and often falls on Mother's Day weekend, so popular flowers such as sweetheart roses, white roses and certain orchids are in high demand. Show the florist a photo of the dress or a fabric swatch so the ribbon matches.

Flowers are optional, and plenty of students skip them. If you want them, our prom corsage guide covers the styles, and who buys the corsage settles the etiquette.

Check tickets and guest forms

School deadlines are firm, and they often close weeks before the dance. Greenwich High School in Connecticut sold 2026 junior prom tickets from March 16 to April 2, and the guest permission slip for a date from another school was due April 2, more than three weeks before the April 25 prom. Aliso Niguel High School required guest tickets for its May 2, 2026 prom to be bought in person by April 30, with an approved guest contract. University High School at Illinois State University wanted its 2026 guest form one week before prom, with a copy of the guest's ID attached.

Find your school's dates today, not the week of prom. Our page on prom guest passes covers what schools usually ask for.

Confirm every booking

Send a short message to each place you have booked. For transportation, confirm the exact vehicle, the pickup times and addresses, and the total in writing. The Chicago-area Better Business Bureau's 2026 prom warning specifically advised confirming the exact vehicle, to avoid a bait-and-switch, and understanding deposit and cancellation terms before paying. Confirm the dinner reservation and the headcount. Confirm salon times, and book a beauty trial for the next couple of weeks if you want one.

Then sketch the day itself. Where are photos, who is taking them, and what is the rain plan? Our prom day timeline and prom photos guide help, and the prom emergency kit covers what to pack.

Check the budget

A month out, most of the money is spent, and the rest tends to leak away in small amounts. Alteration charges, tips, parking, photos and after-prom plans add up. Total what you have spent against what you planned. The prom budget calculator makes that quick, and our page on hidden prom costs lists the ones people forget.

If you still do not have a dress

It is not too late. It just means a different way of shopping. Jovani's guide says late shoppers should stick to what is physically in stock, decide the same week, and move alterations to the front of the line. That is the whole plan in one sentence.

  • Call prom shops before you go and ask what they have in your size today. Skip anything that has to be ordered from the designer.
  • Choose a dress that fits now or needs only a hem.
  • Book the tailor the day you buy, and ask what rush work costs before you pay for the dress.
  • Look at department store racks, in-stock online orders with fast shipping and a fair return policy, rental, and local resale you can pick up.
  • Check free prom dress programs, many of which give away gowns in spring.
  • Avoid unfamiliar websites promising designer gowns at deep discounts. Our guide to prom dress scams explains the warning signs.

Our guide to where to buy a prom dress compares every option, and you can browse prom shops by state to find in-stock dresses near you.

Questions people ask

When should the first prom dress fitting happen?

About four to five weeks before prom, and within two weeks of buying the dress. That leaves room for a second fitting if needed and a final one in the last week. Bring the shoes and undergarments you will wear on the night.

Is one month before prom too late to rent a tux?

It is the tail end of the usual window. Rental companies generally ask for four to six weeks' notice, so reserve right away and confirm the delivery date. If you are inside that window, call a local rental shop and ask what it can still do.

Can I find a prom dress with four weeks to go?

Yes, as long as it already exists in your size. Ask shops what they have in stock today, consider rental and local resale, and book a tailor the day you buy. Leave designer special orders aside, since they are very unlikely to arrive in time.
