Prom is usually for juniors and seniors, the 11th and 12th grades. That is the short answer, and it held at nearly every school whose prom rules we read. What varies is everything around it. Whether younger students can come as dates. Whether juniors and seniors share one prom. And how old an outside guest is allowed to be.
Juniors and seniors, most of the time
School rules say it plainly. Aliso Niguel High School's 2026 prom was "open to Junior and Senior students." Melissa High School in Texas said its 2026 prom was open to juniors and seniors. Mandeville High School in Louisiana limits ticket sales to juniors and seniors currently enrolled there.
Some schools split the two grades into separate dances. Greenwich High School in Connecticut holds a junior prom and a senior prom on different dates, and Rocklin High School in California keeps its Junior Prom for juniors and their guests. A few go the other way. The Glens Falls Chronicle reported that Johnsburg, in upstate New York, called its 2026 dance a junior prom but invited students in grades 9 through 12. Our page on junior prom vs. senior prom explains how those setups work.
Younger students usually go as guests
Freshmen and sophomores can often attend, but usually only as the date of a junior or senior, and some schools do not allow it at all. Five schools show the range.
| School | Who buys tickets | Younger students | Outside guests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aliso Niguel High School (2026) | Juniors and seniors | Freshmen and sophomores as guests, with an approved guest contract | Under 21 on the day of the dance, no middle schoolers |
| Melissa High School, Texas (2026) | Juniors and seniors | Only if invited, and only Melissa students | Approved before the ticket is bought |
| Mandeville High School, Louisiana | Juniors and seniors | Sophomores as a date only, freshmen not allowed | At least 10th grade and no older than 20 |
| University School at East Tennessee State University (2027) | Juniors and seniors | Freshmen and sophomores only if invited | At least 9th grade and under 21 |
| Washington Technology Magnet School, St. Paul | Juniors and seniors | Current students in grades 9 to 12, as a guest | High school students, or recent graduates aged 20 or younger |
The pattern is clear even though the details differ. The junior or senior buys the ticket and is responsible for the guest. Mandeville goes further than most, saying a guest's rule-breaking can lead to discipline for both the guest and the student who invited them.
Age limits for outside dates
If you want to bring someone who does not go to your school, expect an age cap. Under 21 is common, and some schools set it at 20. University High School at Illinois State University required 2026 guests to be at least in 9th grade and under 21. Middle school students are generally left out, and Aliso Niguel said so directly.
These forms are usually due well before prom. Our guide to prom guest passes covers how they work.
How to check your school's rules
Look for a prom page on your school's website, or ask the class advisor or activities office. The guest form itself usually spells out the grade and age rules. Some schools add other conditions, like attendance or discipline requirements, and our page on who can go to prom goes through those in detail.
Once you know you are going, the rest is planning. Our prom planning timeline lays it out, and you can browse prom shops by state when it is time to try dresses on.
