Prom is usually held in the spring, between March and early June. April and May are the busiest months. But there is no national prom day. Each school picks its own date, and two schools ten miles apart can be weeks apart.
So the honest answer to "when is prom" is this. It is whenever your school says it is. This page shows what a real prom calendar looks like, why the dates spread out the way they do, and how to pin down yours.
The short answer
Most American high school proms fall on a weekend evening from mid-March to early June. A few schools go earlier or later, and a few hold prom on a weeknight. Your school's date is set by the school, usually by a class advisor, activities office or prom committee, and announced on the school's website, social pages or in class.
What a real prom season looks like
To show the spread, here are 2026 prom dates published by schools and local newspapers in different parts of the country. This is a sample, not a complete list.
| School | Where | 2026 prom | Published by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprayberry High School | Cobb County, Georgia | Saturday, March 21 | The school |
| Norcross High School | Gwinnett County, Georgia | Saturday, March 28 | The school |
| Foxfire High School | Muskingum County, Ohio | April 10 | Zanesville Times Recorder |
| Melissa High School | Melissa, Texas | Saturday, April 11 | The school district |
| Green Bay East and Green Bay Preble | Green Bay, Wisconsin | April 11 | Green Bay Press-Gazette |
| Washington High School | Fremont, California | Saturday, May 2 | The school |
| Aliso Niguel High School | Aliso Viejo, California | May 2 | The school |
| Warrensburg | Warren County, New York | May 30 | Glens Falls Chronicle |
| Roosevelt High School | Yonkers, New York | Thursday, June 4 | The school |
Two things stand out. First, the season is long. In this sample, the first prom and the last were about eleven weeks apart. Second, and more useful, the spread inside a single area can be wide too. The Glens Falls Chronicle's 2026 roundup for schools around Glens Falls, New York ran from April 18 at Greenwich to May 30 at Warrensburg, with a prom almost every Saturday in between. The Zanesville Times Recorder listed Muskingum County, Ohio proms from April 10 to May 2. The Green Bay Press-Gazette listed Green Bay area proms from April 11 to May 9.
In this sample the Georgia schools went first and a New York school went last. It is a small sample, so treat it as a pattern to check rather than a rule. A school near Glens Falls held prom on April 18, earlier than both California schools here.
Why prom dates vary so much
No national body sets prom dates. Each school balances its own calendar, and a few pressures show up again and again.
The school year itself
Schools fit prom around spring break, testing, sports seasons and graduation. Districts whose school year starts and ends earlier tend to have room for an earlier prom. Schools whose year runs into late June can go later. Roosevelt High School in Yonkers held its 2026 prom on June 4.
AP exams
Many juniors and seniors take Advanced Placement exams in May. The College Board says the 2027 AP exams run over two weeks, May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14. A prom committee planning a May date has to work around those weeks, which pushes some proms into April and others to the end of May or June.
Venues
Proms are often held at hotels, museums and event halls, and spring Saturdays are popular for every kind of event. Schools that want a particular place have to book ahead, which is one reason some districts announce dates so early. Community Unit School District 300 in Illinois had already posted April 24, 2027 as the prom date for all three of its high schools by the fall of 2026.
Local habits
Some schools simply do things their own way. Hartford, near Glens Falls, holds a junior-senior prom every other year, according to the Glens Falls Chronicle. Green Bay West ran a senior ball and a junior ball on the same night in 2026. Yonkers' Roosevelt High picked a Thursday. None of that is wrong. It just means you cannot guess your date from anyone else's.
How to find your school's prom date
- Check the school website and its news or activities page. Many schools post prom details, ticket sales and guest forms there.
- Ask the class advisor, activities director or student government. They usually know the date well before it is public.
- Follow the school's and the senior class's social accounts. Dates, themes and ticket deadlines often appear there first.
- Look for a local news roundup. Papers like the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Zanesville Times Recorder and the Glens Falls Chronicle publish lists of area prom dates each spring.
- Ask a local prom shop. Shops that run a dress registry organize it by school and often hear dates early.
Watch for the deadlines that come with the date. Ticket sales and guest approvals often close well before prom. Melissa High School in Texas sold 2026 tickets from March 30 to April 9 for an April 11 prom. Sprayberry in Georgia raised its ticket price from $90 to $100 after January 31.
If your date has not been announced yet
Use last year's date as a working estimate. Plan around it, then adjust when the real date is posted. If last year's prom was in late March, act as if this year's will be too. Being early costs you nothing. Being late can cost you the dress you wanted.
Why the date matters for shopping
Your prom date sets your whole shopping timeline. A dress ordered from a designer can take months to arrive, and alterations need several weeks on top of that. A student with a March prom needs to be trying on dresses around the time a student with a June prom is still thinking about winter break.
Once you know your date, count back from it. Our prom dress shopping timeline shows what to do and when, and the prom countdown turns your date into a week-by-week plan.
If you want to try dresses on, start early and start local. You can browse prom shops by state, from prom shops in Georgia, where some proms happen in March, to prom shops in New York, where some run into June.
