Renting vs. Buying a Prom Suit

Current rental and purchase prices from the companies themselves, the fees nobody mentions up front, and the simple math for deciding.

Updated 5 min read

Renting a prom suit or tux feels cheaper because the number is smaller. Buying feels like an investment because you keep it. Both can be true, and both can be wrong, depending on one question. Will you wear it again?

Below are the real prices, the fine print, and the math.

What renting costs right now

We checked the rental companies' own websites in October 2026. Prices change, and sales come and go, so treat these as a snapshot.

CompanyWhat the site lists
Generation TuxMost suits and tuxedos at $159 to rent, one suit at $149, and a banner for tuxedos from $139. Its prom page says prom rentals run around $149.
The Black TuxSuits from $169 to $179 and tuxedos from $179 to $199 to rent. A full outfit with shirt, vest, shoes and accessories lists at $289 to $324, with 20 percent off when you rent the full outfit.
Men's WearhouseIts prom page advertises suit packages from $149.99, including jacket, pants, dress shirt, tie and shoes. Its general rental page says packages start at $199.

The pattern is clear enough. Expect roughly $150 to $325 for a complete rented outfit, depending on the company, the style and what is included. That fits a 2025 report in a North Carolina student newspaper, which put typical prom tux rentals at $160 to $200.

Read what is in the package. Some prices cover the jacket and trousers only. Shirt, shoes, vest and tie can be extra.

The rental fine print

The headline price is not the whole story. These are the terms that cost people money.

  • Damage waivers. Generation Tux adds a $12 nonrefundable damage waiver to cover inspection, minor repairs and cleaning. The Black Tux adds an accidental damage waiver that covers only damage fixable by normal dry cleaning or minor tailoring.
  • Late returns. Both companies want the rental back within three days of the event. Generation Tux charges $25 a day per rental after that. The Black Tux charges a $60 rental extension fee, and bills the full retail value if items are not back within 12 days.
  • Lost or ruined pieces. Generation Tux lists replacement fees of $600 for a jacket, $200 for pants, $200 for shoes and $100 for a shirt.
  • Cancellations. Generation Tux gives a full refund up to 21 days before the event, then charges a $40 fee once an order has shipped. The Black Tux refunds in full 45 or more days out, gives account credit between 21 and 45 days, and does not allow cancellation after that.
  • Rush shipping. The Black Tux says a rush charge may apply if you check out less than 30 days before your event.

None of this is unusual. It just means you should return the box on time, keep everything in one place on prom night, and not cut the fabric.

What buying costs

Purchase prices vary far more than rental prices, from basic polyester blends to full wool. Here is what the same three companies listed in October 2026.

  • Generation Tux lists suits to buy starting at $200, and says tailoring is not included.
  • Men's Wearhouse advertises its prom-focused suit from $299.99.
  • The Black Tux lists suits at $550 to $595 and tuxedos at $650 to $795, and full outfits at $800 to $945.

Department stores and outlet racks can go lower, especially on sale. There is good news on the long-term trend, too. Economist Jay Zagorsky, writing in Fortune in 2023, found the price of men's sport coats had fallen about 25 percent since 1998 in government price data, while overall prices rose 86 percent.

Remember the extras. A bought suit needs a shirt, tie, belt or suspenders, and shoes, unless you already own them. And it almost always needs a tailor.

The break-even math

The simple version. Divide the total cost of buying, including tailoring and anything else you have to buy, by the cost of one complete rental. That number is how many times you need to wear the suit to come out ahead.

For example, if a bought outfit comes to around twice the price of renting, you break even on the second wear. Prom plus graduation. Or prom this year and prom next year. If buying costs four times as much, you need four wears.

Then adjust for two honest questions.

  • Are you still growing? A suit bought for junior prom may not fit by senior year. Shoulders and length are hard to alter.
  • Will you actually wear it? A navy or charcoal suit gets worn to interviews, ceremonies and family events. A burgundy velvet tuxedo probably does not.

In 2024, Spectrum News reported Generation Tux's estimate that buying a tuxedo costs around $500 on average and renting costs about half that. That rough two-to-one ratio is a reasonable starting point for your own math.

Fit and alterations

This is the biggest practical difference after cost.

Rentals are sized for you, then sent early so you can check. Generation Tux ships to arrive 14 days before the event and The Black Tux 10 days before. Both will send a replacement size if something does not fit, as long as you report it quickly, within 48 hours of delivery at The Black Tux. Rentals cannot be properly tailored, though. Both companies allow only minor sleeve and hem adjustments without cutting the fabric, and reimburse up to $15 per garment (The Black Tux) or up to $20 (Generation Tux).

A bought suit can be tailored exactly to you. That is the main reason a well-chosen bought suit can look better than a rental. Give the tailor time, ideally a few weeks before prom, and bring the shoes you will wear so the trousers are hemmed to them.

How to decide

  • Rent if it is a tuxedo, if you are still growing, if you want an unusual color, or if this is truly a one-night outfit.
  • Buy if it is a classic dark suit, you are done growing, and you can name two more occasions you will wear it.
  • Either way, book early. Generation Tux recommends reserving a prom rental at least four to six weeks ahead.

Many prom shops listed on this site also rent tuxedos and suits, and can measure you in person. Browse prom shops by state to find one, and see our page on choosing a tux or suit if you have not decided on the style yet.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a suit for prom?

For a single wear, renting is usually cheaper. Buying can come out ahead if you wear the suit again for graduation, interviews or another prom, roughly when the number of wears exceeds the purchase total divided by one rental.

Can you get a rented tux altered?

Only lightly. Rental companies generally allow minor sleeve and hem adjustments without cutting the fabric, and some reimburse a small amount for it. Anything more, or a cut hem, can bring a damage charge.

What happens if you return a rented prom tux late?

You pay a fee. Rental companies typically want items back within a few days of the event, then charge per day or a flat extension fee, and can bill the full retail value if items are not returned at all.
