Prom Week, Day by Day

A day-by-day plan for the last seven days, so the small jobs happen in the right order and prom day is just getting ready.

Updated 5 min read

Prom week is not the time for big decisions. The dress or suit is chosen, the tickets are bought, the group is set. What is left is a string of small jobs that each have to happen on the right day. Do them in order and the week feels calm. Leave them all for Friday night and it does not.

This checklist assumes a Saturday prom. If yours is on a Friday, move everything back a day. If you are reading this with more than a week to go, the one-month checklist is the better starting point. For the hour-by-hour plan on the day itself, see the prom day timeline.

The week at a glance

DayMain jobs
Saturday or SundayFinal fitting or try-on, confirm every booking, waxing or threading
MondayCheck school rules and deadlines, sort out rides, plan the schedule with your group
TuesdayLast comfortable day for a haircut, break in shoes, check the suit
WednesdayNails
ThursdaySpray tan if you are getting one, confirm flower pickup
FridayRinse the tan, lashes, lay out everything, pack your bag, sleep
SaturdayHair, makeup, photos, prom

Not everyone does every beauty step, and the order is not a law. Pros argue about some of it, especially whether nails go before or after a tan. Our page on the order for tan, nails, lashes and hair lays out both sides.

The weekend before

Start the week with a full try-on. Put on the dress or suit with the shoes, undergarments and jewelry you will actually wear. Sit, walk, raise your arms, dance a little. If anything pinches, slips or drags, you still have time to fix it. If you have a final alterations fitting, it often falls in this last week. Our guide to prom dress alterations explains what to check.

Then confirm every booking in writing. Salon, makeup, nails, tan, transportation, dinner reservation, photographer. A short text with the date and time is enough. Ask each one to reply. A booking you assumed but never confirmed is the most common prom-week surprise.

If you wax or thread, this is a good time. It gives redness a few days to settle before anything else touches your skin.

Monday

Reread your school's prom rules. Look for the check-in time, whether doors lock, the bag size limit, whether you can leave and come back, and what ID you need. If you are bringing a guest, make sure their form was approved and they know to bring photo ID. Our pages on prom security and check-in and prom tickets cover what to look for.

Lock down rides with your group, there and back. Who drives, who picks up, and what happens if after-prom ends at 3 a.m. Put names and times in a group chat so nobody is guessing on Saturday. Our page on planning prom with a group helps with the details, including how to split costs.

Tuesday

If you are getting a haircut and have not had it yet, Tuesday is the last comfortable day. The weekend before is even better, since a cut looks most natural after five or six days. Four days still leaves time to fix a mistake. The day before leaves none. Guys will find more on timing in our prom prep guide for guys.

Wear your prom shoes around the house for an hour or two. New shoes cause more prom-night misery than almost anything else, and a few short sessions now soften them up.

If you rented a suit or tux, it may already have arrived. Try on every piece the day it comes. Jacket, trousers, shirt, vest, tie, shoes. Missing pieces and wrong sizes are fixable early in the week and much harder on Friday.

Wednesday

Nails. A manicure midweek gives the polish time to cure fully and, if you are tanning, keeps soaking and cuticle oil away from fresh tan. Our prom nails guide covers gel, acrylic and press-on options and how long each lasts.

Keep skin care simple this week. Prom week is the wrong time to try a new product, a new peel or a new anything. Our page on prom skin prep explains what to stop and what to keep doing.

Thursday

If you are getting a spray tan, shave and exfoliate in the morning and tan later in the day. The tanning pros quoted on our booking-order page recommend one to two days between the tan and the dance, so the color develops and the bronzer rinses off before it can reach your dress. Our prom spray tan guide covers timing and how to keep tan off light fabrics.

Confirm flower pickup or delivery. Know who is collecting the corsage and boutonniere and when. Flowers keep best in a cool place, so plan where they will sit on Saturday morning.

Friday

Rinse the tan if you had one. If you are getting lash extensions or a fill, this is usually the day, after the tan is rinsed so tanning oils do not loosen the glue.

Lay out everything you are wearing and carrying. The outfit, shoes, undergarments, jewelry, bag, ticket, ID, phone charger. Steam the dress or suit if it needs it, following the care label. Then pack your bag using our prom emergency kit list. Doing it the night before means prom day is just getting ready.

Ask your stylist whether they want your hair clean, second-day or dry, and wash it accordingly. Then go to bed early. Seriously.

Prom day

Eat a real breakfast and a real lunch. Leave plenty of time for hair, makeup and getting dressed. Work backward from your check-in time. The prom day timeline has a sample schedule you can copy.

If something goes wrong this week

Something small usually does. A few common ones, and the quick fix.

  • A booking fell through. Call around the same day and ask to go on any cancellation list. Simpler hair and your own makeup are always an option.
  • The dress does not fit right. Call your tailor now, not Friday. If there is no time, fashion tape and a few safety pins handle most small problems for one night.
  • A rental piece is missing or wrong. Contact the rental company the day you notice, while there is still time to ship or swap a piece.
  • Your group's plans changed. Settle rides first. Everything else can be improvised.
  • You are dreading the night. That is common, and it is fine to go for part of it or to go with friends. Our page on deciding whether to go to prom takes that feeling seriously.

If you have not found a dress yet, it is not too late. Our guide to finding a last-minute prom dress focuses on what is in stock now, and you can browse prom shops by state to call nearby stores today.

Questions people ask

What should I do the week before prom?

Confirm every booking, do a full try-on with your shoes and undergarments, settle rides with your group, and space out beauty appointments across the week. Save Friday for laying out your outfit, packing your bag and getting to bed early.

What if a salon or nail booking falls through during prom week?

Call other salons the same day and ask to join their cancellation lists, since prom-week slots open up as plans change. If nothing comes through, a simple style you can do yourself and your own makeup are a perfectly good fallback.
