When to Ask Someone to Prom

The best time to ask is before ticket sales open, and earlier if you want to coordinate outfits. Ticket sales and guest forms set the real cutoff.

Ask before tickets go on sale. That is the real deadline. Most schools sell prom tickets in a short window a few weeks before the dance, and you want the question settled before that window closes. If you are hoping to coordinate outfits, ask earlier still, before your date starts shopping.

There is no official promposal season and no rule that says asking in February is right and asking in April is wrong. But timing does change how easy the rest of prom is.

Timing at a glance

Ticket sales set the real deadline

Schools usually sell prom tickets for only a few weeks, and the cutoff is firm. Three 2026 examples show how it tends to work.

  • Wootton High School in Maryland held prom on May 16, 2026. Tickets went on sale April 20, the price rose each week, and sales ended May 6 with the school's warning of "NO EXCEPTIONS." Nothing was sold at the door.
  • Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania held prom on May 15, 2026 and sold tickets on five afternoons in April. The school said no tickets would be sold or picked up after April 23.
  • Shiloh High School in Snellville, Georgia held prom on March 13, 2026 and required every ticket to be paid for and picked up by March 6. Students without a paid ticket after that date faced a $250 charge, according to the school.

Read those dates together and a pattern appears. Sales opened about four to five weeks before prom and closed one to three weeks before it. Your school may be different, so check its website or ask the class advisor. But if you wait until the week before prom to ask, there is a fair chance the ticket table has already closed.

Prices can climb, too. At Wootton, a ticket cost $40 in the first week, $45 in the second and $50 in the final days. Asking earlier can literally save money. ID rules, refunds and the rest are on the prom tickets page.

Asking someone from another school

Add time if your date goes somewhere else. Most schools want an outside guest approved before you can buy their ticket, and approval is not instant. Liberty required a guest form signed off by a school administrator. Wootton asked students to fill out a guest survey and said they would hear back by email the next business day. Neither is complicated. Both take time you will not have if you ask on the last day of sales. Our page on prom guest passes explains how the process usually works.

Dress shopping and coordinating outfits

This is the timing nobody mentions. If the two of you want your colors to work together, the question has to come before the shopping does.

Prom shops in the U.S. generally open for the season in early January, and many people buy their dress in the first months of the year. Dresses ordered from a designer can take weeks or months to arrive. So if your date buys a dress in February and you ask in April, you will be matching their choice, not choosing together. That is fine for plenty of couples. It is just worth knowing.

Suits and tuxes are more forgiving, because rentals are booked closer to the date. Our guide to matching a suit to a prom dress and the suit color matcher help either way. And if you are the one buying the dress, our dress shopping timeline lays out when to start. When you are ready, you can browse prom shops by state.

Can you ask too early?

Sometimes. If you are already dating, asking in the fall or over winter break is completely normal. Plenty of couples assume they are going together and just make it official.

For a crush or a newer friend, asking months ahead can feel like a lot. Lives change in a semester. People start dating, fall out, switch friend groups. An invitation in October also means both of you carry the plan around all winter. For most people, somewhere between late winter and a few weeks before ticket sales is the sweet spot. Early enough to plan. Not so early it feels like a contract.

Homecoming muddies this a little. It happens in the fall, and a homecoming date is not automatically a prom date. Treat them as two separate questions. (If the two dances blur together at your school, homecoming vs prom sorts them out.)

Can you ask too late?

Also sometimes, but less often than people fear. As long as tickets are still on sale and the other person has not made plans, a late ask is still a real ask. Lots of people decide in the final weeks.

The trouble with late asks is practical. Fewer ride options. Less time for outfits, flowers and alterations. A real chance the person already said yes to someone else or committed to a friend group. If you are asking late, keep the question simple and give them an easy out. Our page on how to ask someone to prom has wording that works at any point in the season.

Junior prom, senior prom and asking an older student

If your school has separate junior and senior proms, check who is allowed to buy tickets for which. At Wootton, only members of the senior class could buy a ticket for themselves. At Liberty, eligible juniors and seniors could each buy one ticket for themselves and one for a guest. Rules like these decide who has to do the asking and the buying, so read them before you plan. More on that split lives in junior vs senior prom.

Picking the day itself

Once you know the window, the exact day matters less than the moment. Avoid test days, game days and anything that puts the other person on the spot in front of a crowd. Some schools also restrict promposals during the school day, so check before you plan anything on campus. For ideas that fit the person you are asking, see our promposal ideas.

If you are the one waiting to be asked

You do not have to wait. Anyone can ask anyone. If ticket sales are coming up and you would like to go with someone, ask them yourself, or make plans with friends so the deadline does not make the decision for you. Plenty of people take that route, and going to prom with friends shows how it works.

Questions people ask

How many weeks before prom should you ask someone?

Aim to ask at least a few weeks before your school starts selling tickets, which is often about a month before prom. If you want to coordinate outfits, ask before your date begins dress or suit shopping, which can be months earlier.

Is it too late to ask someone to prom the week before?

Not if tickets are still on sale and they have not made other plans. Many schools stop selling tickets one to three weeks before the dance, though, so check the cutoff before you ask.

Should I ask my date to prom before they buy a dress?

If you want your outfits to coordinate, yes. Many people shop for prom dresses early in the year, so an invitation that arrives in spring may mean matching a dress that has already been bought.
