Most students who go to prom never come close to being sent home. The ones who are usually broke a rule that was written down weeks earlier, in a prom contract, a parent letter or a ticket packet. The rules are rarely a secret. They just go unread.
What follows comes from real school documents, grouped by topic. Your school's version will differ, but the categories are remarkably consistent.
Alcohol and drugs
This is the rule every school enforces, and the consequences go well beyond the dance.
The Freehold Regional High School District in New Jersey says anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or in possession of them, will be reported to the police, excluded from prom and suspended from school. Seniors will not be permitted to take part in graduation, and underclassmen will not be permitted to attend future proms. Parents are notified.
The Irene-Wakonda School District's 2026 prom guidelines say any violation results in immediate removal from prom and notification of parents or guardians. At Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, Illinois, the 2026 letter to parents says a student suspected of being impaired, or who will not comply with testing, will have a parent called to pick them up, and that violations can bring a suspension of up to five days and loss of co-curricular activities for the rest of the year.
Many schools test at the door. Our page on bag checks, breathalyzers and check-in covers how that works.
Refusing a test or a search
At some schools, saying no is treated like failing. Under Irene-Wakonda's 2026 guidelines, refusing the arrival breath test means you do not get in, and refusing a search once inside means a call home and removal. How testing and searches work at the door, school by school, is laid out on the check-in page linked above.
Dancing
Dance rules are the ones students are most surprised by. Several schools spell them out in detail.
Marian Central's 2026 letter says sexually explicit dancing will not be tolerated, that dancing partners must face one another, and that body surfing, lifting, gyrating with a sexual connotation and straddling are not permitted. A student who breaks those rules has a parent contacted and required to pick them up immediately.
The dance expectations posted for Chugiak High School list what counts as sexually explicit dancing, including grinding, straddling legs or hips, mimicking sexual acts and inappropriate touching or grabbing. Students who dance that way are removed without a refund, and administrators may call parents or assign discipline.
Other schools keep it short. A general dance contract posted by Dana Hills High School says any student dancing inappropriately may be removed from the dance. Short rules leave more to the judgment of whoever is chaperoning. If yours is vague, that is worth knowing.
The dress code
Dress code problems usually stop students at the door rather than getting them removed later. Freehold Regional says students who are not dressed appropriately will be removed from prom. Chugiak's dance page says students who arrive dressed inappropriately will not be admitted. Dana Hills' contract says the same and notes that the district dress code applies at dances.
Our page on prom dress codes explains what codes usually cover, and will my dress pass walks through checking one.
Leaving and trying to come back
This is the rule that catches people who did nothing else wrong. At many proms, once you walk out, you are done for the night.
- Freehold Regional says students and guests may not exit and return at will, including going to the parking lot or to limousines, and that nobody leaves until administration makes an announcement.
- Irene-Wakonda's 2026 guidelines say that once the grand march ends, anyone who exits will not be allowed back in.
- Dana Hills' contract says students may not leave until one hour before the dance ends, and those who leave early will not be readmitted.
- Huntley High School in Huntley, Illinois told 2026 prom-goers that once they checked in, they could not leave the gym, and that every student had to ride the school's transportation to the venue and back.
- Marian Central's 2026 letter says students who leave the assigned areas will be suspended from school.
Some schools also limit leaving early unless a parent comes to get you. Our page on prom etiquette gives one example.
Arriving late
Late arrival rules are less common but real. Dana Hills' contract says no student will be admitted more than one hour after the start time unless arranged in advance. North Hunterdon High School's 2023 senior prom letter said no student would be admitted after 6 p.m., an hour after doors opened. If your group is planning a long dinner, check the cutoff.
What your guest does
A guest from another school is your responsibility at many proms. Dana Hills' contract says that if a guest causes a problem, the student who brought them loses the privilege of bringing a guest to future dances. Other schools apply their full dress code and conduct rules to guests. Our page on prom guest passes covers the paperwork.
What usually happens after
Being removed from prom is rarely the end of it. The pattern in these documents is consistent.
- A parent is called, and at several schools must come and pick the student up.
- The ticket money is usually not refunded.
- School discipline follows, from suspension to losing activities, parking privileges or the graduation ceremony.
- For alcohol or drugs, some districts involve the police.
Where to find your school's rules
Look for a prom contract, behavior agreement or letter to parents. Many schools require a signed copy before they hand over a ticket. Read every line, including the parts about leaving and arrival times. If something is unclear, ask the class advisor before prom, not at the door. Then get back to the fun part. You can browse prom shops by state when it is time to find the outfit.
