Ask someone what prom costs and they will name the dress or suit and the ticket. Those are the costs you plan for. The ones that wreck a budget are smaller, later and easy to miss. A tip here. A restocking fee there. A guest ticket that costs more than yours.
Here are the costs that tend to show up after the budget is set, with real figures where businesses and schools publish them. Add the ones that apply to you to your prom budget now, while there is still room to adjust.
Tips
Tips are the most common forgotten cost, because they never appear on the price list. The Emily Post Institute's tipping guide suggests 15 to 20 percent at a hair salon, split among everyone who worked on you, and the same 15 to 20 percent for a manicurist. For a sit-down restaurant, it suggests 15 to 20 percent of the bill before tax.
That adds up across a prom day. If you book hair, makeup and nails, and then a group dinner, you may be tipping four times. Ask whether a prom package already includes gratuity before you add more. The same goes for hired cars. An etiquette instructor trained by the Emily Post Institute told Patch in 2011 that students hiring a limo need to understand the pricing, and especially whether gratuity is included. Our guide to prom transportation covers driver tips and contracts.
Alterations
Very few prom dresses fit perfectly off the rack or out of the box. A hem is the minimum for most people, and straps, a taken-in bodice or a closed slit add more. If you buy online, the alterations are a separate bill from a separate business. Prom Headquarters, a South Carolina shop listed on this site, says it cannot alter dresses for its online customers because it cannot fit them in person. Get a tailor's quote before you commit to a dress that needs big changes. Our page on prom dress alterations explains what each job involves.
Deposits, restocking fees and cancellations
Many formalwear purchases are special orders, and special orders come with strict money rules. Prom Headquarters is a clear example of how they work. Its layaway plan takes 25 percent at checkout and becomes non-refundable once half the price is paid. Cancelling a special order there carries a 50 percent restocking fee. Even an eligible return costs a 15 percent restocking fee, plus your own return shipping.
Those numbers are one shop's, but the pattern is common. Before you put money down anywhere, ask three questions. Is the deposit refundable? What happens if I cancel? What does a return cost? Get the answers in writing.
Rental fees after the night
Rentals have their own fine print. Generation Tux adds a $12 non-refundable damage waiver to each order, charges $25 a day for every day a rental is kept more than three days after the event, and charges $40 if you cancel within 21 days after the order has shipped. If something is lost or ruined beyond repair, it lists replacement fees, including $600 for a jacket. Our page on whether to rent or buy a prom suit compares the major rental companies. Dress rentals carry late fees too, as our guide to where to buy a prom dress explains.
The fix is mostly about logistics. Put the return date in your phone before prom, and decide who is taking the package to the carrier.
Guest tickets and late prices
If you are bringing a date from another school, check the guest price. At Aliso Niguel High School in California, 2026 guest tickets cost $15 to $25 more than student tickets bought the same week. Prices also climbed the longer people waited, from $110 to $130 for guests, and on the last day there were no guest tickets at all.
Late buying costs money at plenty of schools. Ben Davis High School's 2026 tickets went from $55 early to $75 in the final window. Wootton High School in Maryland went from $40 to $50. Buy early if you know you are going. Our page on prom guest passes explains the guest paperwork.
School balances you have to clear first
Some costs are not about prom at all, but you cannot buy a ticket until they are paid. Liberty High School in Pennsylvania required class dues to be paid first. Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minnesota would not activate a student's ticket code until fines and fees were cleared. If you owe anything, it becomes part of your prom budget. Our page on who can go to prom has more on these rules.
After-prom and the small stuff
After-prom is often a separate ticket. Oak Lawn Community High School in Illinois charged $35 for its 2026 post-prom, on top of a $100 prom ticket. Some schools require a current school ID at the door, and Ozark High School charged $5 for a student ID. Bag rules can mean buying a new clutch. Liberty allowed nothing bigger than 6 by 4 inches.
Then there is the money you lose by breaking a rule. Several schools state that students sent home for breaking the rules get no refund. That is less a cost than a reason to read the rules.
How to stay ahead of them
Go through this list once, mark the ones that apply, and put a number next to each. Then compare the total to what you can actually spend. If it is over, our prom on a budget guide has ways to close the gap, and the prom cost guide explains what the bigger lines usually run.
