Renting a prom tux or suit costs roughly $150 to $325 at the big rental companies, depending on the style and how much of the outfit is included. Buying starts around $200 to $300 for an entry-level suit or tuxedo and climbs into the high hundreds for full wool. Prices move inside those ranges for predictable reasons, and the rest of this page explains what moves you up or down within them.
This page is about the suit or tux itself. For everything else a guy pays for at prom, from the ticket to dinner, see our line-by-line breakdown of prom costs for guys.
Rental prices, tier by tier
We checked the companies' own websites in October 2026. Prices change with sales and seasons, so treat these as a snapshot.
| Tier | What it looks like | Examples we found |
|---|---|---|
| Package entry price | A basic suit or tux, often with shirt, tie and shoes | Men's Wearhouse prom suit packages from $149.99, including jacket, pants, dress shirt, tie and shoes. Generation Tux says its prom rentals run around $149. |
| Standard tuxedo | Black or midnight, notch, peak or shawl lapel | The Black Tux tuxedos at $179 to $199 to rent |
| Statement styles | Velvet, colored shawl collars, tartan | The Black Tux velvet and colored tuxedos at $199 |
| Full outfit | Jacket, trousers, shirt, vest, shoes and accessories | The Black Tux full outfits at $289 to $324 on its listings, before a 20 percent full-outfit discount (its own 2026 rental-cost article quotes $279 to $294) |
Outside sources land in the same place. The Knot, in a 2025 piece on tux rentals, said to expect $150 to $300. Generation Tux's own 2026 guide puts the average basic rental at about $140 and a typical range at $100 to $250. And a 2025 report in a North Carolina high school newspaper put typical prom tux rentals at $160 to $200.
The headline price is not always the whole outfit. Some prices cover the jacket and trousers only. Before you compare companies, compare what is in the box.
What the add-ons cost
If the base rental does not include something, it gets added. The Knot's 2025 estimate was that cufflinks, studs, pocket squares and cummerbunds each add around $10 to $15 to a rental, and vests and shoes around $30 each. Generation Tux's 2026 guide says renting accessories alongside a tux costs at least $20 to $30 more.
Buying accessories outright costs more per piece. When we checked in October 2026, Men's Wearhouse listed pre-tied bow ties at $34.99 and $49.99, a silk pocket square at $29.99, a tuxedo vest at $104.99 and a cap-toe oxford at $119.99. You may already own some of these, or be able to borrow them. Our page on tux accessories explains which ones you actually need.
Purchase prices, tier by tier
- Entry level. The Black Tux listed two lower-priced Essential tuxedos, in black and navy, at $295 to buy, well below its standard line. Men's Wearhouse's prom page advertised its Egara suit from $299.99. Generation Tux's 2026 guide says Friar Tux sells tuxedos for around $230. The Black Tux's own prom guide says purchases start around $300 for entry-level suits.
- Mid range. The Black Tux's standard tuxedos listed at $650 to $695 to buy, with colored shawl styles at $745 to $795.
- High end. The Knot says a fully canvassed fine wool tuxedo typically costs at least $1,500 at retail. Nobody needs that for prom.
Department stores and outlet racks can go below the entry tier, especially on sale. What you give up at the low end is usually fabric (more polyester, less wool) and construction, which affects how the suit drapes and how long it lasts. For one or two wears a year, a well-fitting inexpensive suit is fine.
A bought suit almost always needs a tailor, and that is a real line in the budget. Hems and sleeves are the common jobs. Get a quote when you buy, since prices vary by shop and region. Our guide to how a prom suit should fit covers which alterations are worth paying for.
The fees that are not in the headline
Rentals come with fine print, and it is where people lose money. Generation Tux adds a $12 nonrefundable damage waiver to each order, and The Knot reported in 2025 that Men's Wearhouse charges a similar $12 damage and handling fee at checkout. Late returns, lost pieces, cancellations and rush shipping carry their own charges. Our page on renting vs. buying a prom suit lists each company's terms in detail.
Rentals also allow only light alterations. Generation Tux's 2026 guide says it reimburses up to $20 for tailoring on the trouser hem or jacket sleeves.
What pushes the price up or down
- Style. Velvet, colored and patterned jackets sit at the top of rental price lists. Black and navy sit lower.
- What is included. A package with shirt and shoes can look more expensive than a jacket-and-trousers price and still cost less overall.
- Discounts. The Black Tux was offering 20 percent off a full rented outfit when we checked. Retailers run sales through the year, so it is worth checking before you book.
- Timing. Booking late can mean rush shipping or fewer sizes. Generation Tux recommends reserving at least four to six weeks ahead.
- Where you rent. Online companies, national chains and local formalwear and prom shops all price differently, and a local shop may include in-person fitting. Ask for an all-in quote everywhere.

Many prom shops listed on this site also rent tuxedos and suits. It is worth getting their all-in price next to the online companies before you decide.
