216 Ballantrae Street is not a storefront on a commercial strip. It is a ballroom, chapel and garden in the Aberdeen development outside Valparaiso, the same subdivision built around The Course at Aberdeen on Tower Road, and the gown shop is a room inside the building. Couples in Northwest Indiana have been booking receptions here since 1999.
Jim and Denna Fyock built it that year. Their daughter, Megan Wiesjahn, has worked here off and on since it opened — setting tables, serving weddings, working in the gown shop while she got through college and taught first grade. She came on full time in 2009, a year after her own wedding in the building. She and her husband Trey took over ownership in 2021.
What that means if you are shopping for prom
Two things worth knowing before you get in the car.
First, this is an appointment operation, not a browse-the-racks operation. The shop says it is available by appointment only, though it also says that during the week someone is usually in the bridal store and can often take a walk-in if you call ahead. A standard appointment runs 90 minutes.
Second, the store’s own website is bridal from top to bottom: wedding gowns from $800 to $2,500, samples in sizes 8 to 24, veils, hair pieces and jewelry, plus tuxedo rental — Jim’s Formal Wear lists Aberdeen Manor Bride as an affiliated rental location. Prom is not mentioned anywhere on the site. Clarisse and Dave & Johnny, both prom houses, list this address on their retailer locators. That gap is the whole reason to phone first and ask what is actually hanging on the floor this season, and at what prices.
When someone answers
| Tuesday | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. |
|---|---|
| Wednesday | 12 – 5 p.m. |
| Thursday | 12 – 8 p.m. |
| Friday | 12 – 5 p.m. |
| Saturday | 12 – 5 p.m. |
Thursday evening is the only late night. If a teenager cannot miss school, that is the slot.
House rules, as posted for brides
- No alterations on site. They keep a referral list of seamstresses around the region and hand it out.
- All special-occasion sales are final.
- No children in the gown room; infants excepted.
- No bridesmaid or mother-of-the-bride dresses.
Those are written for wedding customers. Ask whether the alterations and returns rules read the same way for a prom purchase, because on a dress you need by a fixed May date, they matter more than anything on the tag.
The calendar and the schools
Valparaiso Community Schools runs one high school for a district of roughly 6,500 students. Valparaiso High School enrolled 2,089 in 2024–25, plays in the Duneland Athletic Conference, and holds its prom in mid-May — the district calendar put the 2024 dance on May 18, an 8-to-11 Saturday night. That is a later prom than most of the country runs, which pushes the real shopping window into February and March, well before anyone feels the season has started.
The smaller Porter County schools sit close by too: Wheeler, Boone Grove and Washington Township are all short drives, and Chesterton and Portage are north of town. A stop here is one appointment in a parking lot, not an afternoon walking a mall. Plan it that way — and plan a second stop somewhere else the same day, because one appointment-only room is not a comparison trip.
