Judee’s Boutique sits at 1205 East University Drive in Granger, in the northern corner of St. Joseph County, Indiana, a few minutes from the Michigan line. Three prom and formal labels list it as an authorized retailer: Jovani, Terani and Dave & Johnny. That is the part worth knowing before you get in the car — and so is the part that follows.
This is not a dedicated prom superstore. In the shop’s own words it stocks “everything your wardrobe needs from daily wear to occasion dresses to jewelry and handbags,” and that is how the floor reads: special-occasion gowns share space with regular clothes and accessories. Judee’s runs three stores — Granger, La Porte and Valparaiso — and the business dates to 1986, when Judy Gartland started it as a wardrobe consulting service before opening a storefront in an 1880s Victorian house in La Porte in 1995.
Call before you drive
Customer reviews from recent prom seasons point the same direction. One shopper who came in for her daughter’s prom dress said the store no longer keeps much prom stock on the rack, but that two staff members pulled dress after dress until her daughter found one she loved. Another review describes a mother-of-the-groom search where the staff special-ordered styles the customer had found elsewhere.
Read that as a practical instruction rather than a warning. A boutique that orders is a real option if you start early enough for a gown to ship and be altered; it is a bad bet in the last two weeks of April. A ten-minute call decides whether the trip is worth it.
Whose prom this is
Granger is unincorporated, which means the town has no downtown to anchor a shopping trip — the retail lives on the University Drive and State Road 23 corridor instead. Penn High School, in the Penn-Harris-Madison district, is the public school most Granger students attend, and Marian in Mishawaka and Saint Joseph in South Bend draw from the same subdivisions. Because the state line runs just north of town, families in Edwardsburg and Niles are closer to this address than they are to most of the shops in Michiana, and a Michigan prom date does not change what fits.
The address has its own parking lot rather than mall parking, and the University Park Mall stores in Mishawaka are a short drive west if you still need shoes after the dress. If Judee’s Granger does not have what you need in stock, the same company’s La Porte and Valparaiso stores are further west along the toll road corridor, and Elkhart and South Bend have their own formalwear shops within half an hour.
