No appointment needed for prom. That is the first thing this shop tells anyone who finds it online — it leads both of its Instagram accounts and its Facebook page — and in a market where most gown stores put a booking calendar in front of the fitting rooms, it is the most useful fact about the place. Bridal is by appointment. Prom is walk in, pull dresses, try them on.
The address is 897 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham, in the town of Colonie. That road is Route 7 to anyone who drives it, a long commercial corridor of plazas and strip retail running west out of Latham toward Niskayuna and Schenectady, with the Northway crossing it in Latham. It is a drive-to, park-out-front kind of stop rather than a mall trip, which is part of why a no-appointment policy works here: a family can pull in after school on the way home and be back out in half an hour if nothing fits.
The geography puts a lot of high schools inside a short radius. Shaker High is the closest, a few minutes away in Latham itself, and Colonie Central sits on the South Colonie side of town. Shenendehowa in Clifton Park is a run up the Northway. Niskayuna is straight out Route 7 to the west. Cohoes, Watervliet, Troy and the private schools in Troy are all roughly fifteen to twenty minutes out without traffic. For most of that stretch of the Capital Region, Butterfly Boutique is a local errand rather than a day trip.

The shop is family owned, and owner Jennifer Johnson is the public face of it. She appeared on the Third Hour of WNYT NewsChannel 13 in late March to talk through how to shop for prom — late March being roughly the midpoint of the season around here, since Capital Region proms fall at the end of the school year in May and June and the serious shopping starts weeks earlier.
