The end of the state you shop from decides which designers you get to touch. Jovani is the common language, listed at every prom dress store below except the two in the Eastern Panhandle and the handful that track no labels at all. Sherri Hill is pickier. It runs from Morgantown down to Beckley and never reaches either panhandle. The deepest racks sit in the southwest, on one short stretch of I-64.

How should you read a school's prom dress code before you shop?
Print it and bring it to the fitting room. Check the slit height first, then how much back and midriff may show, then whether short dresses count. If a gown you love breaks a line, buy where the fit work stays in the building, as it does at House of Fashions and Tennile's, and ask whether the slit or back can be brought into line.
