Formal season here runs on two calendars at once. Lumpkin County High School is the only high school in the county, so its prom is the prom — one date, one class of about 1,100 students total to dress. A few minutes away, the University of North Georgia’s Dahlonega campus, one of six senior military colleges in the country, puts its Corps of Cadets in dress uniform for a spring Military Ball at the campus Convocation Center; the 2023 ball was set for a Friday evening in late April. For a stretch of weeks every spring, a town this size needs a lot of gowns at once.
Glimmer & Grace works that window. It appears on the official retailer locators for two labels: Amarra and Ava Presley. Both are prom-and-pageant houses rather than bridal-first ones, which is the right shelf for a Dahlonega spring. Amarra says its prom styles are most commonly cut from size 00 to 24, but a catalog range is not a floor — ask what sizes are actually hanging in the shop before you count on one.
The store’s own listings describe a wider business than prom alone: prom, homecoming, bridal, and mother-of-the-bride. That combination tells you something useful. A shop carrying MOB and bridal alongside juniors’ prom is not set up only for sixteen-year-olds, and a mother shopping for a dress of her own on the same trip is not an odd request.
Finding it, and getting hold of it
This is not a square address. Downtown Dahlonega’s historic district — the National Register streets, the Main Street shopping around the public square — is where visitors park, and 28 Millie’s Place is somewhere else: a small commercial address that public directories also list for Millie’s Mini Storage. Both businesses show the same phone number in those directories, so if a call lands at a storage office, that is why. The boutique itself posts on Instagram and TikTok under its own name, and its Instagram bio gives the Millie’s Place address directly.
Coming up from metro Atlanta, GA 400 ends just south-southeast of town at US 19; the last stretch into Dahlonega is US 19. Worth knowing what the drive buys you: on Amarra’s list of Georgia stockists, the next nearest is Flirt in Cumming, back down 400, and the rest of the names sit in Carrollton, Conyers, Rincon, Valdosta and Hazlehurst. For anyone in Lumpkin County or the counties just over the ridge, a local Amarra rack is not a small thing.
Three things to settle on the phone or by message before a first visit:
- Which sizes are physically on the floor in the styles you saw online.
- Whether they record which dress went to which school, so two girls from the same prom don’t buy the same gown.
- Whether alterations are done in-house or referred out, and how long that takes in April.
